Grace Major (middle) and friends of GSA, Emma Agogbva (left) and Rymonda Ballvora (right) enjoy a great day at the Homeless Walk venue near the Douglass School in Leesburg.

Grace Major Celebrates 10 Years with GSA

Grace Major joined The Good Shepherd Alliance (GSA) in 1998 and recently celebrated her 10th anniversary with the Christian non-profit homeless organization.  Ms. Major is the Shelter Monitor at Hebron (House of Refuge) in North Leesburg overseeing approximately 20-25 residents and working with the Director of Finance and Operations to maintain shelter programs.  Since 1998 Grace has become a mentor to hundreds of residents; providing firm accountability, and gentle concern for each individual.

Ms. Major has the responsibility to provide workshops or in service training to all new staff monitors and shelter volunteers.  She transports guests to the doctor, social services and job interview appointments.  Grace maintains supplies and tracks any maintenance issues needing to be addressed by the GSA program office.  She handles homeless status inquiries, volunteer groups, food distributions and other administrative tasks.

Ms. Major has a deep compassion for the homeless in combination with a firm resolve in upholding shelter policies and safety standards, which allow her a seldom matched ability to make quick and wise decisions.  She possesses good interpersonal skills and demonstrates sound judgment presenting a positive and supportive role to guests residing at the shelter.

Ms. Major stated, “Most of the homeless residents have no one.  It’s just us.  When you are so lonely and desperate, that’s a priceless thing to find someone who is caring, who will listen to your needs.  We listen to the residents with all of our heart.  We are not a business.  We’re from the heart here.  We pour our hearts into these people.”

“We do this work because we desire to honor and protect our impoverished people, because we are our brother’s keeper, and because we are a truly loving and merciful community.”

Ms. Major has served as manager, trainer, nurse, and counselor during the course of any given work day.  She creates a “family-style” atmosphere in an effort to provide that which is most lacking in our guest’s personal lives.  She is a peacekeeper and leaves a lasting impression with all who reside here or work on her team.

Please join The Good Shepherd Alliance in thanking Grace Major for 10 years of outstanding support to the homeless and indigent population living in our local community.
