Fimian wrong for 11th District

In a recent (07/23/08) Washington newspaper article by William Flook on US Senate Candidate Keith Fimian's (R) ultra-conservative views "possibly clashing" in a more moderate 11th District in Fairfax County, he is right on target! Fimian's strong alliance with, and dependence upon "Legatus," an organization of Catholic business executives founded by anti-choice activist Tom Monighan (Domino's Pizza), shows he would drag Virginia backwards into the Dark Ages.

"Legatus" has planned a religious community in Florida, which seeks to ban all forms of contraception. However, I am sure those stores will overstock Viagra! Fimian, a Legatus Board Member, has funded his campaign from his membership contributions. He states that he is "pro-life and universally opposed to the death penalty," yet declined to eloborate views on other social issues, arguing that "they are irrelevant to the 11th District!" One of these "irrelevant" social issues deals directly with a woman's right to control her reproductive health!

Fimian's does not believe in the right to choose even in cases of rape, incest, or a mother's life. Viagra yes, contraception, no! I maintain that in a democracy, a woman has the right to choose what methods are best for her reproductive health, just as she has the right to follow the dictates of her religion. While we must learn to respect each other's differences, reproductive freedom of choice in a Democratic Society must remain a personal one. Perhaps if Keith Fimian and his male Republican cohorts were able to grow a womb, they would think twice before they tried to deprive women of basic rights to control their own bodies!
Fimian is wrong for the 11th District, he is wrong for Virginia, and he is wrong for the US Congress!
