New Rotary president steps in
McLean Rotary's new president, dentist Lois Wilson, says she has big plans for her one-year term.
"When you get involved with a project for Rotary and you help people, it's a very satisfying feeling," said Wilson, 50, who has been involved in Rotary for the six years she's lived in McLean.
That may not seem like a long time in the scale of most Rotary clubs, but in her tenure the busy Dr. Wilson has already served as McLean Rotary's vice president and secretary, and last year she shepherded a group of young professionals through a tour of Africa, visiting Rotary clubs in Swaziland and South Africa.
Wilson was installed on June 27 and is already at work leading the group on its main projects for the year.
Locally, the group is concentrating on the "Lifelong Love of Reading," a mentoring program in association with Timber Lane Elementary School in Falls Church. As part of the program, McLean Rotary has "adopted" two classes of children at the school.
"We follow the kids through elementary and middle school, and provide reading materials and mentoring," Wilson said.
During Wilson's year as president, the group will also help volunteer surgeons in Guatemala and work with Rotary International to fight child mortality worldwide.
"I want every member of the club to have their 'aha!' moment when their heart is touched and they feel like a Rotarian," Wilson said during her first speech as president.
