Board approves future Metro entrance
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the location of a potential Metro station on the Fairfax Corner property Monday. The developer of the shopping center set aside the land as a proffer during redevelopment. A corresponding entrance on the other side of Route 66 will be established during discussions of additional development at Fair Oaks Mall.
While there are no firm plans to extend the Orange Line farther west at this time, Supervisor Pat Herrity (R-Springfield) said he believes there is interest in the private sector to widen Interstate 66 and add some form of transit to the highway through a public-private partnership and that a plan could be finalized in the next few years. Earlier this year, Herrity asked the board to advance an environmental study that is needed before private developers could submit a public-private partnership proposal.
