McLean, Vienna citizens unite against Tysons threat
Concerned citizens from communities surrounding Tysons Corner have joined to form the Greater Tysons Citizens Coalition, a group focused on keeping growth in Tysons from overwhelming the “edge communities.”
The group is concerned that the high densities planned for Tysons with the coming of metro could continue even if Dulles rail doesn't.
“What happens at Tysons will be felt beyond any bright lines drawn on a map,” said Laurie Cole, a Vienna councilwoman and the GTCC's spokesperson. Members of the coalition include community leaders from McLean Citizens Association, the Providence District Council, Fairfax Citizens for Responsible Growth and four Vienna Town Council members.
“We are all worried that some people want to put Manhattan, New York, on an infrastructure better suited to Manhattan, Kansas,” said Rob Jackson, president of the MCA. The group has called for a formal statement from Fairfax County that the high densities planned in Tysons won't be allowed without the train. Taskforce chair Clark Tyler has repeatedly said that the group's work is only viable if metro comes to Tysons, but the GTCC doesn't seem inclined to trust the taskforce's work.
The group has also asked county leaders to change the taskforce's direction, urging a focus on specific infrastructure needs. The taskforce is expected to finish its work this spring. Information about the coalition can be obtained by e-mailing GTCitizens@yahoo.com. One coalition participant, the McLean Citizens Association, is hosting a March 6 town hall meeting on Tysons Corner. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at McLean Community Center.
