Church donation box thieves arrested

Thanks to a television viewer’s tip, two Herndon brothers have been charged in the April 25 theft of donation box cash from St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Fairfax City.

Investigators said that a surveillance video of the larceny was released to the media on April 30. One hour after the video of the theft aired on two local TV stations, a citizen called the detective assigned to the case and provided information about the suspects on the video. The detective was able to obtain warrants for one of the suspects.

Fairfax City Police said that on May 8 at about 8 a.m., the citizen called the detective again to give the exact location of the suspects. Both were subsequently apprehended in the Town of Herndon.

John Andrews, 52, of 13511 Clear Lake Court in Herndon, was taken into custody and transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. He was was charged with petit larceny, destruction of property and possession of burglarious tools. Bond was set at $3,000.

Police said Gregory Andrews, 48, of the same address, was taken into custody on unrelated charges and transported to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. He is being held without bond.

Warrants charging Gregory Andrews with petit larceny, destruction of property and possession of burglarious tools were obtained by City of Fairfax Police and transmitted to Loudoun County Authorities for service.
