French cooking demonstrations, meals: Jacques Haeringer, chef de cuisine of L'Auberge Chez Francois, has announced his fall 2008 cooking demonstration schedule. Haeringer will share his passion for French cuisine and demonstrate expert cooking techniques. Each demonstration will be followed by a five-course luncheon paired with three fine wines.


Demonstrations are scheduled through Dec. 13. Each takes place on a Saturday and begins at 11 a.m. The schedule is as follows:

  • Oct. 24: Bountiful Harvest ($100/person)
  • Nov. 1: Alsatian Hunter's Feast ($100/person)
  • Nov. 7: Seafood Lover's Thanksgiving ($100/person)
  • Dec. 5: Holiday Delights ($125/person)
  • Dec. 13: Champagne Celebration ($140/person)

Good Taste! Tour


Good Taste! Tours and Reston Limousine have a tour planned for Sunday, Oct. 19, with the title of "Comfortably Yum -- The Great Autumn Experience."

Historic Whitehall Mansion will display its autumn flavors and colors on this peak fall foliage culinary tour.

Good Taste! Tours, Whitehall and Celebrations Catering have partnered to offer a food and wine experience nestled in the scenic setting of Bluemont. Participants will arrive at Whitehall and enjoy a holiday showcase, featuring cooking demonstrations, award-winning winemakers and a four-course gourmet harvest meal. A glass of award-winning Corcoran Vineyard wine will be featured at brunch. From Whitehall, the tour will continue with a venture to Bluemont Vineyards, a mountaintop winery. After Bluemont, participants will visit quaint downtown Middleburg.

Two other tours still in the planning state are a Southwestern Thanksgiving Meal Nov. 8 and "Cooking a Holiday Meal" Dec. 6.

Afghan food, culture

Panjir, 224 Maple Ave. Vienna, announces a special Afghan dinner Thursday, Oct. 16, 6-8 p.m.

Owner Assad Nizay has designed a five-course meal to showcase the flavors of Afghan cooking, and cookbook editor cultural anthropologist Dianne Hennessy will discuss the history, art, culture and food traditions of Afghanistan.

The cost is $43.75, Vienna residents $35. This includes coffee, tea, tax and gratuity.
