Burke soldier dies in Iraq
A 26-year-old soldier from Burke died Sept. 23 while serving in Iraq.
First Lt. Thomas J. Brown suffered wounds when his patrol came under small-arms fire during dismounted operations, according to a press release from the Department of Defense.
He died in Salman Park, Iraq.
Brown was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division that had been stationed in Baumholder, Germany, the release said.
Media outlets in Connecticut are reporting that Brown grew up in the city of Shelton, Conn., before graduating from George Mason University.
Gov. M. Jodi Rell has ordered the U.S. and State of Connecticut flags to be flown at half staff in honor of Brown until he is buried, according to a news release on the state's Web site.
“We must never lose sight of the sacrifices our military members make each and every day as they serve our great country,” Rell said. “Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Lieutenant Brown. We can best honor his selfless dedication to our freedoms by keeping Lieutenant Brown – and all our men and women overseas – in our thoughts and prayers.”
