Obituary

Elizabeth A. DeLong

Died May 13, 2008

Elizabeth Ann DeLong, 76, of Springfield, a longtime Fairfax County schoolteacher, died May 13 from respiratory arrest at Johns Hopkins Bayview Center in Baltimore, Md.

Friends may call May 20, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield, where a memorial service will take place May 21 at 11 a.m. Burial will be May 28 at 9 a.m. in Arlington National Cemetery.

Mrs. DeLong was born July 8, 1931, in Williamsport, Pa., to the late Pearl Audet. She received a bachelor's degree from East Stroudsburg Teaching College in 1952, the same year she married George DeLong. The couple moved to West Springfield in 1965 and were active in the Springfield Golf & Country Club for many years.

Mrs. DeLong taught in Fairfax County Public Schools for 27 years as an intermediate teacher. She would take current events from The Washington Post and incorporate them into questions for a "Jeopardy"-style game to boost her students' reading, focus and memory. She also was well-known for spearheading and producing the elaborate, colorful Christmas Pageant each holiday season at Washington Irving Intermediate School. Mrs. DeLong retired in 1993.

Her husband, U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. DeLong, died in 1991.

Survivors include two sons, Michael DeLong of Lorton, and Steven DeLong of Ashburn; and two grandchildren.
