Noël R. 'Gogs' Newell

Died July 1, 2008

Noël Rogan "Gogs" Newell, 82, a homemaker and former service representative for Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co., died July 1 at her home in Reston.

She was born Dec. 25, 1925, in New Orleans, La., to the late Frank U. and Lucille McLain Rogan. Mrs. Newell attended Louisiana State University on a full academic scholarship, receiving a bachelor's degree in education with a concentration in mathematics in 1946. She met her future husband, Robert "Bob" Y. Newell III at LSU's Episcopal Student Center. They married in 1946 and moved to the Washington, D.C., area.

Mrs. Newell worked for C&P until after the birth of their second child in 1951. She served as room mother, chauffeur, Sunday school teacher and vacation Bible school leader for her six children.

In their retirement years, the Newells bought a condo in Sanibel Island, Fla., where they entertained their children and grandchildren. Mrs. Newell was especially fond of shelling on Sanibel's beaches. The couple also traveled extensively.

In addition to her husband of 62 years, survivors include her children, Robert Y. Newell IV of Portola Valley, Calif., Noël N. Smith and Rebecca N. Briggs, both of Bethlehem, Pa., David R. Newell of Fairfax, William L. Newell of Ellicott City, Md., and Paul R. Newell of Richmond; 19 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Compassion International, Colorado Springs, CO 80997 (www.compassion.com); The Smile Train, 41 Madison Ave., 28th Floor, New York, NY 10010 (www.smiletrain.org); or U.S. Fund for UNICEF, 125 Maiden Lane, New York, NY 10038 (www.unicefus.org).
